Food and Potato Famine
Potato field near Comber
The real thing (accept no substitutes) growing beside the Islandhill Road.
In 1589 on 40,000 acres of land near Cork, Ireland Sir Walter Raleigh introduced the Potato to Ireland from Peru.
Full of vitamins and grows in poor soil. The Irish also exported the crop. However in the 1840’s disease hit the
potatoes and there was a great famine. Many Irish immigrated to the United States at the time – over 1 million.
